Kharkiv, Ukraine, December 24th – At 2:59 AM today, a resident of Kharkiv, living at 54a Novooleksandrivska Street (Building 6), looked out of his sixth floor window after hearing a loud bang outside and saw a car on fire in the yard below and two young men, both in their twenties, as they rushed away from the scene. He shouted “What are you doing?” to them, but that only made the men run faster. He then saw them damage more cars as they ran away.
The vehicle which was set on fire, a red Opel Omega, had been used to transport equipment for peaceful gatherings organized by Euromaidan in Kharkiv. Now its front and back windows are broken and its interior is burnt. Firefighters and the police arrived at the crime scene and they have started their investigation. This car was parked at this address for weeks.
During the Euromaidan rally on December 23th, this car was parked at the beginning of Girshmana Street, in front of Taras Shevchenko monument, in the center of the city, nearby the site of the rally. It was used to bring big loudspeakers, sound amplifiers and other equipment to the event. After 8:00 PM, when the rally ended, the car would not start. The owners had to call a taxi to tow their car to its normal parking address.
Because of a pattern of recent attacks on Euromaidan’s Kharkiv offices, Euromaidan coordinators suspect that the attackers had planned to destroy the car right in front of the Taras Shevchenko monument, where the arson would have intimidated many more citizens. However, the perpetrators did not foresee that the car would be towed to another location.
A briefing for journalists is scheduled for 11:00 AM Kyiv time today at 54a Novooleksandrivska Street (Building 6). Google Map: http://bit.ly/1bnujTm
