“Maidan Monitoring: Election 2012” project was presented in European Parliament

Sep 30th, 2012 | By | Category: Election 2012, European Union, Ukraine

On 28th of September, 2012, our project, titled, “Maidan Monitoring: Elections 2012” was presented in the European Parliament by Yuriy Lukanov, an expert of our project and the Head of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine. The presentation was conceived and sponsored by Pavel Zalewski, a European Parliament member.

Mr. Lukanov stated that the signs of fraud are already manifest in the present election campaign. The key issue, indicating that the law is being violated, is the inclusion into the campaign some marginal parties representatives who, in fact, represent the ruling Party of Regions. According to Mr. Lukanov, this is a bright example of a series of measures that are being implemented by the “party of power” to rig the elections.

Another statement Mr. Lukanov made was that the mass media in Ukraine feels that the presure on them is increasing. The power structures are trying to implement some new instruments in order to manipulate journalists. Yet, the journalists are fighting this; their instantaneous reaction against the proposal of Vitaliy Zhuravskiy to make the so-called “slander” a criminal offense is one indicator of their fight.

Answering the question of Marek Sivec, who is the head of the Delegation of the European Parliament to monitor the collaboration between the EU and Ukraine, Mr. Lukanov stated that the violations of the law dy the Party of Regions during this election campaign are so systematic that it might serve as grounds to declare the results of the coming elections null and void.

Members of the Europarliament, as well as official elections observers, took part in the subsequent debates. The observers asked for advice regarding the focus of their work, and Mr. Lukanov recommended to focus on the vote count.

We will post the videotape next week.

And the following is a more detailed presentation that was made not only in Brussels but also in Washington, DC. The next planned presentations will take place in Moscow and in Warsaw.
