Oleksiy MatsukaDonetsk. 31 July 2011. Someone had barricaded the door of the apartment of journalist Oleksiy Matsuka and set it on fire. Had he been inside he would be burnt alive. Arsonist had left the memorial wreath with an inscription: “To Oleksiy from grieving friends”.

Oleksiy sees there a clear connection with his professional activities. He is frequently reporting on corruption among the highest ranking officials of Donetsk region in the most popular regional website “News of Donbass”  where he is a chief editor. He is a very active civic leader and heads an NGO “Donetsk Institute of Information”.

The previous record of crimes against journalists in Donetsk region makes to take this case very seriously. Oleksiy’s colleagues are very concerned about his security. He appealed to militia (police in Ukraine), however it might be no enough. We call for expression of international solidarity with Oleksiy as a possible prevention of further escalation of violence against journalist.

Oleksiy can be reached for comments by phone +38 (067) 644-32-90 or email (he is fluent in English)
